To further support the transition from the infant setting to Beechview Junior, we plan in time to focus on Phonics teaching within the Autumn term to prepare all pupils for our Reading for Pleasure curriculum. 

At Beechview Academy, we use Read Write Inc, which is used throughout the school. Through the use of Read Write Inc resources and staff training, pupils are taught the English alphabetic code-the +150 graphemes that represent the 44 speech sounds-using a systematic synthetic phonics approach. Through their original series of story books, students are taught: 

Accuracy

● To read new sounds and review previously taught sounds

● To sound out the names of characters and unfamiliar words

● To understand the meaning of new words

Fluency

● To read words with appropriate speed

● To read accurately

Through structured, and intensive intervention we ensure pupils make accelerated progress and are able to access the curriculum.
