At Beechview, PSHE (personal, social, health and economic) and Personal Development are integral parts of our broad and balanced curriculum. They reflect the needs of our children, school and wider community. Through teaching PSHE and Personal Development we aim to develop children’s knowledge, skills and attributes needed to successfully manage their lives.  Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional well-being, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. Personal Development at Beechview is at the forefront of our daily activities and is the cornerstone of our ethos. As a result, the children will become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society who understand their personal and social development, and are confident in tackling many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of modern life. Not only within the framework of PSHE but throughout the whole school curriculum, we create a range of opportunities for our children to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.

At Beechview, we use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to our children’s needs. The mapping document: Jigsaw 3-11 and statutory Relationships and Health Education, shows exactly how Jigsaw and therefore our school, meets all guidance including the statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements as outlined by the DfE. The lessons are balanced, factually-accurate and age appropriate which guarantee progression across year groups and are designed to  ensure that the needs of all individuals can be met.

At Beechview, PSHE is taught in regular timetabled lessons where clear learning objectives are set through the scheme and are achieved, but also cross-curricular learning opportunities are explored with other subjects as we understand that PSHE underpins all learning and the emotional needs of our children.

Raising the profile of PSHE across the school, we enrich teaching and learning through the whole school, upper and lower KS and class assemblies which celebrate specific events and promote British values and Beechview Beliefs, such as our Anti-bullying week and many others.
